Global Caché GC-IRL: How to Capture IR Codes

Global Caché currently provides iLearn v2.9 as the companion application for its IR products, including the GC-IRL. It allows you to capture IR commands and convert them between Global Caché and Hex (CCF) formats. iLearn is provided as a Windows .exe application.

Important: Global Caché also lists the older GC-IRL Utility, but it is now under Unsupported GC Utilities. Global Caché no longer provides support for this software. For new installations, use iLearn. Download iLearn v2.9

Connect the GC-IRL

Connect the GC-IRL directly to a PC using its female DB9 RS232 connector. A USB-to-serial adapter can be used if the computer does not have a native RS232 port. The GC-IRL is powered through the RS232 interface, so no external power supply is required. Power is taken from the RTS line, pin 7.

RS232 settings:

  • Baud rate: 9600
  • Data bits: 8
  • Parity: None
  • Stop bits: 1
  • Flow control: None

Hardware flow control must be disabled, because the RTS line is used to power the GC-IRL.

Capture an IR command

  1. Open iLearn.
  2. Select the correct COM port.
  3. Connect the GC-IRL.
  4. Point the original remote control at the GC-IRL.
  5. Press the required button.
  6. The captured IR data will appear in iLearn.

For best results, Global Caché recommends positioning the remote approximately 150-600 mm (6-24 inches) from the GC-IRL, depending on the remote.

The GC-IRL captures the carrier frequency and timing information required to reproduce the IR signal. It supports IR frequencies from approximately 32kHz to 500kHz according to the technical specification.

Note: Some older Global Caché documentation describes the range as 30kHz-500kHz. The current GC-IRL API specification lists 32-500kHz. For technical product specifications, Digital World should use 32-500kHz as the more specific figure from the API specification.

Convert and save the captured code

iLearn can convert captured IR commands between Global Caché and Hex (CCF) formats. Captured output can also be copied to the Windows clipboard for use in IR databases and spreadsheets. For larger IR libraries, Global Caché also provides Control Tower, its cloud-based IR database. Control Tower provides access to a large library of IR codes in both HEX and Global Caché formats.
